It is a feat of horological mastery to be able to tell the exact time to within one-fifth of a second; to strike the hour, quarter hour and minute on demand; to display the position of the stars, and to supply the correct date with no need for adjustment in the coming century or two-all in the space of a tiny case that houses an even tinier mechanism. The tourbillon and its aerial revolutions are an endless source of fascination. The wearer could be forgiven for letting the beauty of the mechanism, consisting of almost a hundred tiny components with a total weight of less than 1 gramme, overshadow its true purpose of improving the precision of timepieces by compensating for errors due to gravity in a vertical position.
